Artworks of the Week-March 2nd

We have a very special Artwork of the Week featuring two artworks instead of one. Chalee's (fifth grader) "Scrolling Blast" and Rachel's (second grader) pop out heart were selected by our local Art teachers Linda Hofman and Liz Rosewicz!

Mrs. Hoffman's choice was Rachel's Badda bing Badda Boo! pop out heart (shown below) which was created using construction paper and sharpies. What stood out to Mrs. Hoffman was the intricate designs in the heart as well as making the heart 3 dimentional. She also liked how the confetti surrounding the heart was in the same color sequence that was featured inside the heart. This is Rachel's first artwork that has been selected for Artwork of the Week so Congratulations Rachel!

Mrs. Rosewicz went with the fun and playful approach with Chalee's "Scrolling blast" which was created using black sharpies and watercolor for the background. Chalee was unsure of what she wanted to make so she started creating different sizes of scrolls. She then added colorful streaks of watercolor for the dramatic background. Mrs. Rosewitz loved the background and the scoll shapes that were used with the black sharpie. The color as well as the playfulness of the background and pattern used set this artwork apart from the others!

Both of these artworks will be featured on the JC Arts Studio window until March 9th. Congratulations to both students and check back to see who will become the next Artwork of the Week!

Saturday kids experiment with color

Saturday's Elementary Art class gave children a chance to experiment by painting with water, oil, and food coloring; and watercolors, rubbing alcohol and salt. After seeing how salt and rubbing alcohol reacted with the paints they wanted to see what pepper would do - and learned that it really doesn't do anything! Lesson learned!

Artwork of the Week-February 24th

Fourth grader Cassidy's drawing "Puppy Love" is our latest "Artwork of the Week."

This drawing was done Thursday, February 23rd in our after school program Creative Zone. She recently learned how the make a dog and wanted it to be the focal point of her drawing. She sketched out the dog first and used soft pastels for the sky and grass. The director was quite impressed that Cassidy took what she learned outside of the studio and incorporated those newfound skills in Creative Zone. She also liked the experimentation that was used with the soft pastels for the background. This drawing is Cassidy's first artwork that has been chosen for "Artwork of the Week" so congratulations on a job well done!

Make sure to check out Cassidy's drawing that is showcased on the JC Arts Studio window sill. It will be displayed until March 2nd.

Artwork of the Week-February 17th

Our newest "Artwork of the Week" was made by fifth grader Hannah.

Her mountaintop scene was made on sketch paper using markers. Her use of space and attention to detail (birds, clouds, people hiking up the mountain) was what caught the Director's eye when choosing this drawing. This is Hannah's first artwork that has been selected for "Artwork of the Week" so congratulations!

Artwork of the Week-February 10th

The "Artwork of the Week" was created by fifth grader Katelyn.

This extremely detailed 3D art started out as a box that is now transformed into a replica of a bedroom. The idea behind this what that Katelyn wanted to make a bigger replica using a sturdy box because her previous bedroom creation fell apart to easily. Magic nuudles, egg cartons, fabric, toilet paper rolls, acrylic paint, and stuffing were used to make the furniture. This artwork took approximately three weeks to complete and was well worth the time spent!

Katelyn's bedroom replica is showcased on the JC Arts Studio window until February 17th. Make sure to stop by and check it out! Who will be our next Creative Zone's "Artwork of the Week"? Check back next week to find out!

Artwork of the Week-February 3rd

The "Artwork of the Week" was created by fourth grader Elisabeth.

Soft pastels and a black sharpie marker were used to create this drawing. Elisabeth's use of color, her exceptional skills with the soft pastels, and the illusion of stained glass made this piece of art the "Artwork of the Week." Elisabeth is now in the running to become February's Artist of the Month. Check back soon to see who our next Artwork of the Week will be!

Artist of the Month - January 2012

Chalee is our January Artist of the Month!

Her work was selected for the good use of blending with colored pencils and her attention to details in the dragons.

Throughout the month, multiple pieces are selected for Artwork of the Week - based on quality of craftsmanship, creativity, composition, and time spent. From those works, the JC Arts Director looks for progression in skill and growth in the artist.

Join us as we gather to welcome a traveling troupe of Murder Mystery Actors as they present "You Know the Old Slaying."
This cast of characters are characters indeed with intertwining relationships and plenty of skeletons in the closet. But the closet door is about to come open and one of our characters may have his or her final curtain call.

Artwork of the Week - Jan 27, 2012

The "Artwork of the Week" was a collaborative effort; created by Julia & Chalee.
The project started out as a book illustration, bases on the series "The Warriors." Chalee drew the center cat and Julia designed the background. This artwork was selected,in part, for the good representation of depth of field and good teamwork from the artists.

Our Lil' Emerging Artist Preschool Class is held every Wednesday from 11:15 am - 12:00 pm at the JC Arts Studio. Though the class originally focused on exposing the children to a wide variety of arts, we have found that the parents have become just as involved in this exploration. A typical class usually involves 2 projects, which will incorporate at least one of the following: drawing, painting, or 3D arts. This is a great opportunity for the children to socialize with other Lil' Emerging Artists and parents to share experiences.

Creative Zone Critique

Instructor Dayonna McKinney leads her Creative Zone students in a critique. These discussions allow the students to share ideas and suggestions while practicing effective communication. Critiques also help build the students' ability to analyze, understand, and appreciate artwork.

*In case you are wondering, the student in the front is rolling up her sleeves to dive into a paper mache project. :)

The "Artwork of the Week" was created by Stephanie Stanislow.

Every week the children in the JC Arts classes have the opportunity to create projects to submit for "Artwork of the Week." Every Friday Gail, the JC Arts Director, selects the project with the most quality craftsmanship and creative design to be Artwork of the Week.
The artwork is showcased both on the blog and in the JC Arts Studio window.
From the Artwork of the Week projects, an Artist of the Month is chosen.

Youths Visit with State Representatives About Arts' Funding

On Jan. 11, we took a couple of Junction City High School students to Topeka to participate in the Arts Legislative Breakfast.

In front of a large group of legislators, Tiffany Phillips and Andrew Craig relayed their thoughts about how important the arts are in their lives and the community.

They then joined Tonia Martin & me as we spoke with representatives about the need to have the arts funding restored to the Kansas Arts Commission. After visiting with several representatives, Tonia, Tiffany and Andrew stayed at the Capitol and watched a House session while I joined the Kansas Citizens for the Arts for its January meeting. It was great to hear the many compliments about the students and their excellent speeches.

In the time between sending the files to the press and receiving the printed product, an item from our 2012 Winter/Spring catalog has already sold. Though this particular piece now has a good home, we currently have other work by Everett Cox and several other talented artists available.
